Use of waste-derived materials

Dunbar supplies both bulk and packed products to customers across Scotland and northern England.  Its product offering includes Phoenix© cement - a product with a lower carbon footprint and bagged cement packed in the company's ground-breaking plastic packaging.

Carbon neutral

A number of biomass energy sources are described as 'carbon neutral' because the carbon dioxide released during the use of the biomass as a fuel is cancelled out by the carbon dioxide used by the biomass during its growth.

Recycled Liquid Fuels (RLF)

RLF is a high-grade blended fuel made to a specification from non-recoverable materials used in making everyday products such as screen wash, paint, printing ink and brush cleaners.

It is an excellent fuel fo r the cement-making process due to its high calorific value allowing the fuel to be totally consumed by the process.

Chipped used tyres

Used tyres are an ideal fuel for the cement-making industry, with the same high-energy value as coal and a consistent specification.  The high temperatures in the kiln (1,500°C to 2,000°C) and long residence time means that the tyres are entirely consumed with the steel content used and absorbed as part of the cement.

Consuming used tyres as energy for in cement kilns is an important part of tyres' supply chain with over 40 million tyres removed from vehicles every year and disposal by landfill banned in total in 2006.

Management standards

Lafarge is committed to operating to the highest standards.  As part of a company -wide accreditations and/or registerations, Aberthaw holds the following standards:

  • ISO 14001 and Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) - Environment
  • OHSAS 18001 - Health and safety
  • ISO 9001 - Quality management systems

Maintaining these standards is evaluated each year across all UK cement operations.
