Energy

A real commitment to reducing our carbon footprint

At Lafarge we have been taking real action to reduce our carbon footprint and are on track to meet our existing reduction target of 20%.

This commitment includes the energy consumed by our mobile plant, our extensive processing and manufacturing facilities and all of our UK offices.

Lafarge Aggregates have turned this commitment into real action and as a result have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard as a sign of the action taken on climate change through reducing their carbon footprint.

The Carbon Trust Standard was developed by the Carbon Trust in 2007/08 to encourage good practice in carbon measurement, management and reduction by businesses and public sector organisations. It assessed our performance in the following ways before awarding Lafarge Aggregates the Standard:

  • Measuring our carbon footprint;
  • Managing our carbon emissions; and
  • Taking action to reduce our emissions.

Sustainability: how can we leave a lighter trace?

At Lafarge we are deeply committed to reducing our impact on the environment. This can be seen in our partnership with WWF and being awarded the Carbon Trust Standard.

We are taking action in a range of ways including:

  • Installing half hourly electricity meters at our sites
  • Installing motion sensors for lights
  • Undertaking base load analysis
  • Introducing a company-wide Display Energy Certificate scheme for sites
  • Introducing an 'Opportunity Database' of energy saving best practices
  • Undertaking extensive training and employee awareness workshops and activities

These actions and many other initiatives helped us to save 4.5 million KW of energy in 2009.

Watch this video to here some of our employees talk about ways to be more sustainable at home and work.
