Quarry Restoration

Leaving a lasting legacy for generations come

At Lafarge we are proud of the legacy we leave for future generations. Before we begin to develop any quarry we carefully consider the future restoration of the land and work tirelessly, often with a range of partners,  to leave a lasting legacy.

Our award-winning track record includes managing two National Nature Reserves; managing, enhancing and safeguarding 34 Sites of Special Scientific Interest; and creating award-winning country parks, boating lakes, educational centres and places of national significance.

Land guardians:

In the UK we operate at approximately 200 locations and act as guardians and careful managers of over 16,000 hectares of land. This land includes operational sites, woodland, restored and virgin land.

We invest significantly in land management and employ specialist land restoration experts who are dedicated to making a significant contribution to enhancing biodiversity and leaving lasting legacies.

We can't do this alone so we work in close co-operation with a range of partner organisations throughout the UK.

Partnership Approach

At the heart of our approach to land management is working in partnership with wildlife trusts, community groups, local authorities and other groups who share our passion for biodiversity.

  • Conserving and enhancing biodiversity and natural habitats through restoration and aftercare
  • Ensuring all our quarries undergo WWF biodiversity screening
  • Creating a detailed Biodiversity Action Plan and Restoration Plan
  • Building new amenities for people to enjoy
  • Creating exciting and safe places for children to study

We are proud of this approach - it has enabled us to develop partnerships which have delivered unique legacies and lasting relationships.

Some comments about our approach:

Sir David Attenborough on Brandon Marshes, near Coventry: "Through the support of Lafarge and the Heritage Lottery Fund we have a huge new facility which will be of benefit for decades to come...."

Peter Stone, Former Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust: "Besthorpe has the potential to become one of the most important wetland sites in the UK"

Contributing to Biodiversity enhancement

All our quarries undergo WWF biodiversity screening, enabling us to create a Biodiversity Action Plan and monitor, manage, preserve and enhance biodiversity.

This plan guides the progressive restoration of the land we quarry enabling us to create diverse habitats for a range of flora and fauna. Previous projects have included new habitats for water voles and otters, new heather beds, and helping to create breeding grounds for birds such as sand martins, swallows and cormorants.

In 2010 Lafarge is working in association with the International Year of Biodiversity, as dedicated by the United Nations.

Global Biodiversity Symposium

We recently acted as principal sponsors of the First Global Business of Biodiversity Symposium in London. This included organising a tour of our Panshanger Quarry to show delegates from around the world how we are acting to enhance biodiversity. For more information, please click here
