FAQ 2 : Our products and services (Capital Two)

 

Sustainability is at the heart of many of our product innovations, this can be seen in the reduction of the environmental footprint of our operations. Key acheivements in this area include:

 

 (1) BES 6001 - Responsible Sourcing Accreditation ('Very Good' rating - Concrete and Aggregates)

 (2) Development of a range of sustainable concret and asphalt products

 (3) Moving more materials by rail than any other quarry operator

 

 

Future targets in this area include:

 

  • Increasing the proportion of recycled materials
  • Measuring and calculating the CO2 per product
  • Developing a zero carbon housing solution

 

 


FAQ 3 : Our partners and communities (Capital Three)

 

We are committed to supporting the communities around our operations and recognise the importance of being a good neighbour and a trusted partner. Key acheivements in this area include:

 

 (1) A unique partnership with the Prince's Trust

 (2) A 37% decrease in community complaints

 (3) All quarries have the opportunity to have an operational Liaison Committee

 

 

 

Future targets in this area include:

 

  • 80% of sites operating Considerate Constructors Scheme
  • Reducing community complaints
  • Stakeholder Engagement Plans in place for each site

FAQ 4 : Our legacy; including enhancing biodiversity and quarry restoration (Capital Four)

 

As guardians of nearly 20,000 hectares of land we are enormously proud of our work in terms of enhancing biodiversity and restoring quarries so as to leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Key achievements in this area include:

 

 (1) Achieving a prestigious UEPG Sustainable Development Award

 (2) Establishing Biodiversity Action Plans in conjunction with the WWF

 (3) Helping to create the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, the nation's place of national remembrance

 

 

 

Future targets in this area include:

 

  • Establishing a water footprint for every site
  • Acheiveing DEFRA targets of 95% of SSSIs in favourable condition
  • Establishing an External Stakeholder Panel

Meeting the challenge

The UK is part of Lafarge Group's focus on ensuring its products are able to meet the evolving challenges associated with developing robust sustainable construction principles.  Lafarge continues to work closely with industrial associations, energy suppliers and architects to identify building methods which are cleaner and more environmentally sustainable.
