Low Impact Living

Waterford Hamel

The Waterford Hamel Housing Scheme is a Low Impact Living development by Lafarge comprising 11 exceptional homes in Hertfordshire. Capable of producing near-zero energy bills, the development is a scalable blue-print for how the industry can transition to all new homes being 'zero carbon' from 2016.

The development is set to be the UK's largest concentration of naturally-heated homes constructed using innovative building materials and techniques that maximise concrete's thermal mass.

Safeguarding natural resources - minimising  CO2 emissions

Waterford Hamel will use minimal finite natural resources during construction and significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption when in use; saving an expected 27.42 tonnes of CO2 year-after-year.

Waterford Hamel will generate no CO2 emissions in occupation, homes will feature solar water heating, photovoltaic generated electricity, and rainwater harvesting.

Innovative construction using thermal mass

Waterford Hamel's exceptional performance is achieved through clever design. Innovative use of materials reduces build costs and allows re-use of all waste during construction on site.

Waterford Hamel incorporates high thermal mass characteristics using a range of Lafarge concrete products together with super-insulation which significantly reduce the heating load of each home, massively reducing annual running costs.

Scalable development

Waterford Hamel will be a benchmark development providing a structured, commercially repeatable approach to developing homes that exceed the Government's zero-carbon target.

Open market

Waterford Hamel homes will be high-quality, sold by Bovis Homes on the open market with a three year post-occupancy evaluation programme. This will be fully funded by Lafarge to allow analysis over that period.

Naturally-heated homes

Waterford Hamel will be the largest concentration in the UK of naturally-heated and naturally ventilated homes that achieve the Government's highest level of sustainability, Code Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
